D.P. (Season 01, 2021)

6 eps. Storyline 9/10. Acting 9/10. Cinematography: 9/10. Music: 10/10.

Korean actor Jung Hae-in is my guilty pleasure as I'm not actually a fan of K-Drama. Watched D.P. cause I would like to give another try for Hae-in show after Snowdrop (D.P. originally aired before Snowdrop). However, the storyline was uneasy to digest. You need to hold your breath every after emotional and disturbing scene.

D.P. (Deserters Pursuit), is a department in the South Korea military institution with a specific task i.e to catch any soldier who left the barracks without permission. The story behind why the soldiers ran away, or how the D.P. comrades tried to catch them, was what made the show.

The show was based on the personal experiences of the scriptwriter, Kim Bo Tong, who once enlisted, and said “D.P. was created to fight the oblivious notion that the military (in South Korea) is now better. I wish to help those fighting in the dark. I hope to make a better tomorrow for someone who might be crying alone at this time.”

It is obviously stated that over the years, bully cases as well as superiority complex attitudes are still happening in the South Korea military institution. Some deserters ended up committing suicide. Most cases are forgotten without any proper investigation. And I was just surprised by how the show being brutally honest, natural, yet dark.

Oh, I really love the music soundtracks especially the opening song, Crazy by Kevin Oh (find them on Spotify!). I would never skip the intro on each episode.

At the very end, the show would really kick your head down to the lowest ground and left you with emptiness.

RP, March 2022, now craving for Season 2.
